Chapter 18

Petra Smythe sat on an old tan leather sofa in the small flat she’d managed to secure above a corner shop in a quiet row of business premises, by using someone else’s ID. It was still dark out. She stared into the oblivion through the window until shapes and colours appeared in the nothingness. The fingers of her right hand irritated a loose thread in the seat’s stitching beside her. It amazed her that there were still landlords out there who weren’t too interested in background checks and references. They didn’t care who a tenant was, as long as the rent was paid on time every month.

She looked around the sparsely furnished flat with a sense of detachment. It wasn’t a home, merely a base, with one small bedroom just big enough to fit a double bed and a set of drawers. The only items that made the place look lived in was the remnants of last night’s feast she’d indulged in to try to quell the empty loneliness inside her. She’d worked her way through a bag of potato chips with dip, a quart of ice cream and a full packet of cookies, but none of it had helped. Even the half litre bottle of vodka she’d started, hadn’t kept the demons at bay as it usually did. Nothing filled the intense loneliness that overwhelmed her. Everyone in her life abandoned her in the end, no matter how hard she tried to keep them. This was why she couldn’t walk away from Anna and vowed to fight for their relationship.

She broke down into uncontrollable sobs, feeling like the only person left in the world—missing Anna so badly and desperately. She sat upright, and inhaled a deep breath. It wasn’t time to allow herself to fall apart or they really would need to put her back into the psychiatric facility.

“Pull yourself together,” Petra snapped as she made her way down the street to the hair dresser. She stopped as her reflection came into view in the window. A haunted look appeared in her eyes. She no longer recognized herself, at one time, she’d has long hair. Her mother had never allowed her to cut it, her words still lingered in her mind, ‘Real young ladies have long, lustrous locks to impress the men.’ Petra smirked, it was the main reason she cut her hair.

Prior to her father’s death, life was wonderful. Each day, she’d run to greet him when he came home from work, and throw herself into his arms, Daddy’s girl, he’d always called her. She often thought that her mother was a little jealous of how close the two of them were, even though her father obviously adored his wife, and was never afraid of showing his affection for her.

Petra remembered the day the police arrived on the doorstep, shortly after nine in the evening. They stood on the stoop with their hats in their hands had all she heard was her mother scream. Petra ran down
